Scouting is unique among youth activities. The cost to join Scouting is minimal compared to youth sports and most other extracurricular activities. That's because we want Scouting to be available to every boy, regardless of his family's ability to pay. Sometimes, boys and families that can most benefit from programs like Scouting are also unable to afford them.
But the cost of registering a Scout doesn't cover the costs of providing the Scouting program in the Districts and Council. We believe that people recognize the importance of Scouting. This is where the Friends of Scouting campaign comes in.
"In my sixteen years on the bench, I don't ever recall having a Scout or former Scout come before me accused of any serious wrongdoing. That alone says all I need to know about the value of Scouting."
—Judge Gordon Burkhart
Our Council has one of the lowest costs per child in Scouting in the nation, and is far lower than other southern California councils, but it still costs over $100 per boy to operate the council. Compare this to youth sports programs that operate on the “pay to play” principle, and it quickly becomes apparent how important fundraising is to the continued health of Scouting in the Inland Empire. Friends of Scouting allows individuals, families, and businesses to donate to the Council according to the value Scouting provides them, and according to their financial ability.
